Tarai Blue's 3-day residency offers a rare, hands-on opportunity to witness and participate in the complete process of extracting natural indigo pigment from the Indigofera tinctoria plant.
Participants will take part in every stage of the process—from harvesting indigo leaves and fermentation to oxygenation, pigment formation, and shaping the pigment into traditional handmade indigo cakes. Throughout the residency, they will gain first-hand experience of this centuries-old craft while working alongside the Tarai Blue team.
In addition to the primary focus of pigment extraction, participants will learn how to prepare Henna and Fructose indigo vats. They will also be introduced to the complete dyeing process, including fabric preparation, washing, dyeing, and finishing techniques. Each participant will be provided with fabric for hands-on experimentation, will have the opportunity to dye their own samples using the vats prepared during the residency, and can take their hand-dyed pieces home.
